Get Behind Me, Satan

Consider Luke 14:26 -

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

This scripture does not mean you should despise your loved ones. Instead, you should despise any influence that goes against God's will (Matthew 10:37). You should recognize when guidance or opinions are contrary to God's plan for you, regardless of who it comes from. Reject any influence that is not of God.

When Jesus was informing the disciples of his upcoming suffering, the following conversation ensued.

Matthew 16:21-25

22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.

23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

Living closely with Peter, essentially as brothers, Jesus could have been influenced by his counsel. However, Jesus loved the Father's will. Any counsel against His predetermined sufferings, Jesus identified as devil-inspired. To embrace the mind of Christ, you too must reject thoughts or counsel that encourage self-preservation. This firm stance reveals your true alignment with the mind of Christ.
