THE SPIRITUAL ANATOMY OF MAN

What is the Spiritual Anatomy of Man? Man is a triune being. The word triune, though often reserved when referring to the Godhead, simply means having 3 parts in one. Human beings are triune beings because they are made up of 3 parts, namely, body, soul and spirit.

Activity 1 - Find scriptures that support that man has 3 parts.

1 Thessalonians 5:23

23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 4:12

12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart,

BODY - The physical structure of a person or an animal, including the bones, flesh, and organs.

Therefore, the human body refers to the physical structure of a man. The word human is from the root word “homo (sapiens)” and “humanus” which is interpreted to mean “of or belonging to man” or in a literal sense ‘earthling’, or ‘earthly being as opposed to a god’. The word also has its origin with the word humus, which means soil.

BEING - The nature or essence of a person. The word “being” refers to the spiritual aspect of the man, which is the soul and spirit. Thus, a human being is a humus being, or more clearly stated ‘of the soil’.

Activity 2- Find 3 scriptures that refer to the human body being made up of soil.

Genesis 2:7

7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Genesis 3:19

19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

2 Corinthians 4:7

7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

Job 10:9

9 Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again?

1 Corinthians 15:45-47

45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.

47 The first man is of the earth, earthy; the second man is the Lord from heaven.

THE PURPOSE OF THE BODY

What is the Purpose of the Body? It is a vehicle of expression for spiritual beings (i.e., the soul, devils or the Holy Ghost) . The body allows: 1] the spiritual aspect access to the earth 2] the spiritual aspect to experience the earth 3] serves as an identifying factor: identified as a man as opposed to an animal or tree; or, identified as Tom as opposed to Sally. The body is given to the soul as a tool of expression. The soul, however, is the master of the body. The body was given to the soul so that the soul may access planet earth. The body has no power, life or abilities without a soul being in it. Thus, it is the spirit within the body that supplies it with life and nature.

Activity 3 - Find 2 or more scriptures that prove that the body can do nothing without the soul & spirit.

James 2:26

26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Ezekiel 37:4-6

4 Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD.

5 Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live:

6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know That I am the LORD.

FEATURES OF THE BODY

• Identifying features of the body as opposed to the soul and spirit:
• Made from the dust
• Visible
• Physical
• A vehicle of expression for the spiritual aspect of a person (inner-man)
• Dead without the inner-man
• The clothing of the inner-man “MAN”

Genesis 2:7

7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

TIP #1: The word ‘man’ in the context above refers to the human body. When studying the scriptures, it will do you well to take note of certain words used. Why is this important? Because, other scriptures will also use those words in the same way as it is explained in the first context. Being keen to the choice of words will keep us on our toes, as we allow the Holy Spirit to give us vision into the scriptures. Take for example. The word conversation: the dictionary’s definition of conversation is 'the informal exchange of ideas by spoken words'. With that in mind, look at the following scripture.

1 Peter 1:15

15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

If we were to apply the dictionary’s definition to this scripture, it would make much sense. It would be interpreted to mean that all our discussions/dialogues should be pleasing to God. That we should abstain from gossiping and carnal chatter. However, when we examine the use of the word in other scriptures, we see how it explains what it means in the scripture above.

Galatians 1:13

13 For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it:

Ephesians 2:3

3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

The word is explained in these contexts as lifestyle, livelihood, or behavioral conduct. With all that said, the same is true for the word “Man”, used in:

Genesis 2:7

7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Therefore, document its definition in your spirit and knowledge for when we do studies on the 'old man' and the 'new man'. Hence it is important for us to understand that the body was the only aspect of man that was made from the dust. The use of the word man in Genesis, also serves as an identifying factor to cause us to understand who God was dealing with and the shape of the vessel He was forming.

TEACHING ON THE HUMAN BODY

Why should we teach about the body? Because the body serves as a vessel for either the soul, Christ or the devil. It is extremely relevant to both the mystery of Christ and the mystery of iniquity. A mystery means to shut the mouth; it is something that one cannot clearly or confidently speak of. A huge aspect to both the mystery of Christ and the mystery of iniquity [being a mystery] is that these two spirits are carried in and by flesh.

Colossians 1:27

27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

1 Timothy 3:16

16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Ephesians 2:2

2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

• The flesh is deceptive in the sense that it causes one not to truly perceive the spirit that operates within it. The flesh is nothing, but it is the spirit that gives nature to the flesh.
• The bodies of the Sons of God have been villainized and been blamed, by false doctrines, as the cause of sin.

As contenders for the faith, we must know how to give an answer to every man concerning or in defending the truth. There are many doctrines that have villainized the body of the sons of God, deeming it sinful. If we are to endeavor to minister to the church that the sons of God can live sinless in this earth, we must attack the root of their false beliefs. A huge pillar in the false doctrine of dual nature is

that the flesh is of an evil/sinful nature. Therefore, if the body is defined, and the purpose and use of it is made clear, one can easily debunk the false doctrine.

• The body without the Spirit is dead. It has no power of itself. It is defined by the spirit within it. Thus, if the Holy Ghost is within the flesh, then the flesh is of a divine nature.
• It is important to understand what the body is, because many believe that the body is who they are, as opposed to simply a house for the real them (their soul). A proper understanding of the body will be helpful in ministerial cases: - Where people have been victims of abuse. - Where people suffer from low self-esteem or disgruntlement because of a discontentment with their appearance. Also, in cases where people exalt themselves in pride because of their appearance. - Where people are in need of encouragement because of illnesses. Do you have any more reasons?

TIP #2: It is crucial when ministering a teaching on the body, to squash false perceptions of its use and/or power. One must first discern the belief systems before them. Ask questions if possible, listen to their choice of words, and be keen to the Holy Spirit.

Goals for Teaching on the Human Body:

1. Have them understand and agree that the body without the Spirit is dead.

2. Have them understand that it is the spirit within the body that supplies it with nature and life.

3. Give the listeners the ability to clearly separate the purpose of the body vs the inner-man. If they are able to do this, they will be able to do so when you later introduce spirits: who also (will) reside in flesh, such as the spirit of iniquity (Satan), and the Holy Spirit. Thus they will be able to see how these two spirits will use the flesh and what the flesh will grant them.

Romans 12:1

1 I beseech you therefore, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
