We have heard time and time again that the heart is the seat of all emotions, feelings, appetites and all that good stuff, but how is it that your feelings and emotions send you to Hell?
St. Matthew 15:18-20
18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart ; and they defile the man.
19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.
So in other words, the sins we commit come from what is already in our hearts. The life we live is a reflection of the disposition of our hearts. So if evil is already in our hearts then we will eventually sin, right? Right, but as I stated before, God will not judge His people on the basis of one act, but on the intent of the heart. There are many stories in the Word that prove that point. Take the Apostle Paul for instance. Formerly known as Saul, the Apostle Paul was a Pharisee highly esteemed by his fellow Pharisees. A scholar of the Jewish church, but was a persecutor of the Disciples of Christ. Hundreds died at his command and he believed that he was doing God a favor. But then God came with the truth. And what did Paul do? Submit. That is what could enable God to forgive all the sin that Paul had committed before and call him to become one of the world’s best-known and influential apostles in the bible (See Acts 9).
So now proving that God makes all His decisions based on the decisions we make in our hearts, let us look at the flip side of Paul’s situation: Sodom and Gomorrah.
