Fiery Trials

In the journey of faith, we often associate trials with moments of straying from God’s principles, feeling as if our rebellion warrants challenges. However, many of us can attest that trials persist even in our obedience to the Holy Spirit. These challenges often emerge unexpectedly, arising from family, coworkers, church members, friends, and even adversaries. Why does opposition find us when we have resolved to be holy before God?

1 Peter 1:7 provides insight:

“That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.”

Fiery trials encompass circumstances, situations, or relationship issues that cut to the core and deeply pierce the heart. What makes it “fiery” is its distinction from regular challenges. The fiery trial can only be overcome through submission to the Holy Spirit. It feels tailor-made, rubbing you in all the wrong ways. A key attribute is that you often find yourself in them before realizing how it all happened; the only way out is through righteous endurance.

These trials are a setup: the stage is being set for you to glorify God more profoundly than ever before. Gold may lose value or beauty, get lost or stolen, or corrode when exposed to certain elements. In contrast, our faith, when tested, increases in value. Knowledge gained from fellowship with God and experiences of obedience in trials form your faith. They establish your resolve to glorify God, and that faith cannot be lost or stolen. The lessons learned will accompany you into the next trial.
