Ability to Discern

Discerning is the ability to distinguish between what is of God, what is of the devil and what is of our own hearts. It is the ability to determine truth in any situation and apply the wisdom of God to it, so that God will be ultimately glorified in it. Discernment not only protects one from the wiles of the enemy, but also equips them with the wisdom on how to protect others from them. Discernment will also allow the leader to perceive God’s plan for the lives of those they lead and the hindrances to the manifestation of said plan.

Judgementalism on the other hand is often confused for discernment. When one is unmerciful, quick to gossip, and harbors spite and iniquity in the heart, these are signs of judgementalism. When one attempts to work ministry out of judgementalism, their ministry will be inspired by the devil and will lead to destruction and division in the household of faith.

When assessing those you lead, ask yourself these questions:

• Does this individual come forth with the wisdom and mind of God in any situation?
• Is it customary for the individual to be merciful?
• Is it customary for this individual to give the benefit of the doubt or are they quick to assume unrighteousness in others?
• Is this individual an asset in corporate ministry and counselling?
• Do they hold people to past mistakes, failures or sins?
• Are they full of iniquity from situations of the past?
• Can you trust this individual with the secrets of the saints?

Ephesians 6:11-12

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

1 Peter 5:8

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.
