God of Gods

It is an awesome thing to hear directly from the Lord. There is something about His words that can carry you for years. I have had many such encounters with the Lord over the years; but the latest visitation was most encouraging and timely.

Tell my people, “They are gods to this world. I have set them so. But if they will not live as a god in this world, they will not qualify to live as one in the next.” Needless to say, this admonition by the Father set off a spiritual alarm which caused me to fear and tremble. Now, I am truly experiencing the same godly fear the first apostles lived.

My heart melted as I thought on the awesomeness of our God, but what about my brothers and sisters in the Lord? Do they understand this great grace? Will they live their lives in the shadows of turning, forged by false doctrines, or man’s concepts and religious ideologies?

I want us to be aware that the concept of the saints as gods is not something I have just come up with. I had nothing to do with it. It is the essential thread in the common salvation we received of the Father. It is the mystery of Christ now being revealed to the church; even as Paul said in Ephesians 3:5, “which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit”.

Psalm 136:2

2 O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever.

Let’s take a trip back in time to the mind of God. Have ye not cast out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and have made you priests after the manner of the nations of other lands? so that whosoever cometh to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, the same may be a priest of them that are no gods (2 Chronicles 13:9).

The first thing we must acknowledge is God demanded that Israel have no other god before Him. But more than that, we see God never acknowledges any of the idols they and other nations made with their hands as gods. In fact, He said they are not gods.

2 Chronicles 32:13

13 Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands? were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand?

The idols can do nothing. They are impotent. They cannot walk or talk. They are made of wood or stone and can do nothing. But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an ever- lasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation (Jeremiah 10:10). Paul also rehearsed this truth in his letter to the Thessalonians. “For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye tuned to God from idols to serve the living and true God” (1 Thessalonians 1:9).

God is alive and powerful. He is able to do all that is in His will. But my point here is to make men know that God is the only one of His kind. He is the only God, and there are no others. He is One. Now we also know God is a Spirit. Therefore, if there are any other real gods, they too must be spirit.

Having scoured the Old Testament, we see clearly God never acknowledged anyone or any- thing man produced as God. However, the interesting thing is that as far back as the writings of Moses we see something peculiar.

Moses:

Deuteronomy 10:16-17

16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.

17 For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:

Daniel:

Daniel 2:47

47 The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret.

David:

Psalm 136:2

2 O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever. How can this be? He said there are no other gods. He is the only true and living God. But here, through three of His prophets, He acknowledges there are or will be others. Beloved, these verses are prophetic in nature.

Again, David writes . . .

Psalm 82:6-8

6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.

7 But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.

8 Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations.

Here, God acknowledges another as God in the 8th verse. This we know to be Jesus; for He is the one who will inherit all nations. But even so, He also acknowledges there are others, (those who are joint heirs with Christ). They, too, are gods. But they are not as the idols made with man’s hands. They are the children of the only one true God. They are the offspring of the Almighty. Jesus reflects on this prophetic word as He addresses the Pharisees.

John 10:34-35

34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?

35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;

If God called those to whom He entrusted with His word, gods, then they are gods; and the scriptures cannot and will not be broken. In other words, that which the Father has spoken will manifest.

John 10:36

36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?

Here we go . . . “him whom the Father has sanctified” is the Son of God. But the glorious thing here is Jesus is the first of many brethren. Before we go any further; let us look at another prophetic utterance God gave to the King of Babylon.

Daniel 4:8

8 But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and before him I told the dream,

This was the Father allowing the King to speak of something that would come to be in the last days. The spirit that came upon Daniel to do great exploits was the same Spirit that would be in the sons of God. Now this is the conclusion of the matter:

1 Corinthians 8:5-6

5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)

6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

Yes, there are those who are called gods, but they are not. However, the one true God has begotten children by and through Jesus Christ. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God (Romans 8:14-16).

Oh my, you must believe that God has made us gods to this world. Don’t be as the Pharisees were and think it blasphemous to declare you are the sons of God, so therefore, you too, must be a god. This word is not meant to puff us up, or to push us into vain glory. It is meant to establish in our heart the great love our Father has toward us. He has made us to be sons of a living God. We are His offspring and the scripture will not be broken.

Open your heart and believe the report. This is the heart of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is the great mystery hidden in God. Let all who love truth proclaim that we are in God; and God is in us. He is the God of gods.
