Prayers Of Repentance

Acts 8:22

Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.

2 Corinthians 7:11

For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.

The prayer of repentance must be truthful and sincere. If that is the case, then according to Paul, true repentance will produce the following fruit.

1. Godly sorrow

2. Carefulness: never to be presumptuous and passive about sin in the Body of Christ.

3. A clearing of oneself: an earnest confession renders a clear conscience.

4. Indignation: anger with oneself provoked by the realization of having offended God.

5. Fear: the beginning of wisdom is to fear the Lord. Thanking God for mercy.

6. Vehement desire: overwhelmed by the desire to please the Lord.

7. Zeal: a new found energy to serve the Kingdom of God.

8. Revenge: And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled (2 Corinthians 10:6).

1 John 1:6-10

6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the

blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from

all unrighteousness.

10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word

is not in us.

I really want to take the time to explain this passage of scripture since it has been so misunderstood. First of all, John is writing to the Church. He begins…

• Verse 6 with, “If we say...,” the ‘we’ here is the Body of Christ.

• In verse 7 he says, “If we walk…”

• Verse 8 “…we deceive ourselves…”

• Verse 9 “If we confess our sins…”

Thus, when he says: “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us,” he is referring to those who have sinned but will not admit such. Instead, they lie and pretend to be holy. These are born again sons of God who have no fellowship with God because of unacknowledged sin.

However, this passage is not accusing all saints of sin; it acknowledges that there are some who do walk in the light.
