Blood, Fire, and Vapour of Smoke: Reading the Cosmic Signs

When Peter quoted Joel's prophecy on the Day of Pentecost, he was not simply reciting ancient poetry. He was delivering a precise, prophetic roadmap of events that would mark the period immediately preceding the Day of the Lord. The signs listed in Acts 2:19-20 are not vague or symbolic. They are specific, physical, observable phenomena that will occur in the heavens and on the earth, and understanding them is essential for any believer who wants to navigate the days ahead with wisdom and clarity.

Let us take each sign seriously and examine what it actually describes. The text lists: blood, fire, and vapour of smoke in the earth beneath; the sun turned to darkness; and the moon turned to blood. These are not metaphors for spiritual conditions in the church or in society. These are literal, physical events that will be visible to the naked eye, events so dramatic and undeniable that they will cause the inhabitants of the earth to tremble.

Begin with the blood moon. A blood moon occurs when the earth passes between the sun and the moon during a lunar eclipse, causing the moon to take on a deep red, blood-like color. This is not a rare phenomenon; blood moons have occurred throughout history. But the blood moon described in Joel's prophecy and echoed in the book of Revelation is not a single, isolated astronomical event. It is part of a sequence of cosmic disturbances that will be so severe and so prolonged that they will fundamentally alter the experience of daily life on earth. The moon will not shine for 4 hours of the night. The familiar comfort of moonlight will be gone. The darkness will be deeper and more disorienting than anything the modern world has experienced.

Then there is the sun turned to darkness. Revelation 8:12 describes this in the context of the fourth trumpet judgment: 'And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.' This means that for a significant portion of the day, the sun will not shine. Four hours of every day will be plunged into an unnatural darkness. This is not an eclipse. This is a sustained, catastrophic dimming of the sun caused by events in the heavens that will have no natural explanation.

The blood, fire, and vapour of smoke in the earth are connected to the catastrophic events that precede and accompany the trumpet judgments. Consider what the first trumpet brings: Revelation 8:7 states, 'The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.' Hail, fire, and blood falling from the sky. A third of all trees destroyed. All green grass burned up. This is not symbolic language. This is a description of catastrophic physical destruction on a scale that is almost incomprehensible to the modern mind.

The second trumpet brings something like a great mountain burning with fire cast into the sea, turning a third of the sea to blood, destroying a third of sea life, and sinking a third of all ships. The third trumpet brings a great star called Wormwood falling from heaven, turning a third of the rivers and fountains of water bitter, causing many people to die from the poisoned water. These are the specific, concrete events that the signs of blood, fire, and vapour of smoke are pointing toward.

Now consider what this means practically. The infrastructure of modern civilization, the supply chains, the shipping lanes, the fresh water systems, the agricultural systems, will be devastated. The world that you currently know, with its predictable rhythms of work, commerce, food supply, and daily life, will be fundamentally disrupted. The stars falling from heaven, described in the sixth seal of Revelation 6:13 as 'the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind,' will contribute to the atmospheric and environmental catastrophe that produces the darkened sun and blood moon.

Why does all of this matter for how you live today? Because understanding what is coming changes your priorities. When you know that the financial systems, the agricultural systems, and the physical infrastructure of the world are going to be shaken to their foundations, you stop placing your ultimate trust in those systems. You stop building your sense of security on things that are about to be removed. And you start investing your energy, your resources, and your passion in the one thing that cannot be shaken: the Kingdom of God and the souls of men and women who need to hear the gospel before these events unfold.
