Studying the Word

In this lesson I want to discuss the importance of studying the Word of God.

Isaiah 28:10

10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

In some schools of thought it is assumed that since the Holy Ghost is the revelator it is not necessary to study. Oftentimes scriptures are taken out of context in order to support this mindset.

Luke 12:11-12

11 And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:

12 For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.

This passage is not advocating that there is no need for study. It speaks of being forcibly taken and interrogated concerning the gospel you teach or preach. It is at that time you will be given what to say. The word study means to scrutinize, look at carefully, investigate and to research. To do any of these effectively takes time, which means that we must spend quite a bit of time in the Word investigating, scrutinizing and researching. Just as there are several ways to teach the Word, there are also several ways to study it. Here we will discuss two of the most popular methods I have used.

1. LINE UPON LINE METHOD, (LUL): In this method the scriptures are studied and often taught verse by verse of a particular chapter. This method is good to use when you are simply studying a particular book or chapter. However, it also gives you a clear revelation as to that writer’s interaction with people he wrote to. This method allows you to achieve a sense of history and significant events affecting the church.

PRECEPT UPON PRECEPT (PUP): To teach a doctrine, principle, rule, or guideline using scriptures from various books and chapters. However, you must become proficient at breaking the chapters down into different segments of thought if there be any. For instance, let us look at the 16 verses of the 2nd chapter of 1st Corinthians. LUL: This part of the chapter is a simple declaration as to the moral posture the apostle ministered in while he was among them. He confesses to have sought to impress them with nothing other than Christ Jesus and his reverence to the Lord. PUP: The testimony of God St.

1 Corinthians 1:6

6 Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you:

Revelation 19:10

10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

1 Corinthians 2:1-3

1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.

2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

LUL: This section is devoted to highlighting the ministerial posture in which Paul taught and preached.

Hebrews 6:1

1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?

The Mystery of God The Princes of this World The Deep Things of God

LUL: The Holy Ghost is the source of all knowledge pertaining to God.

PUP: The Spirit of God The spirit of the world The Natural Man know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

2 Corinthians 2:15-16

15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

As you can see from the chart above, the method of study is dependent upon what you are trying to accomplish in the study.

If you are teaching a principle such as the one we used this passage for; to establish the source of all revelation of the Word, then the line upon line method is good for the verses displayed. (However, you can always run references on these verses as well to gain even more confirmation.) Note also that the chapter can be used to establish or confirm many precepts or doctrines or principles.
