Point Based Teaching Lesson 49 POINT BASED TEACHING THE STRUCTURE

The structure of point-based teaching is taken right from the Bible. In the New Testament Apostle Paul wrote letters to the churches and would dedicate a whole chapter to one point causing his writing to be more thorough in teaching content. This is where our method of point-based teaching comes from. The point-based methodology is very similar to an attorney delivering his closing arguments. Let's dive into one of Paul's teachings on sin after salvation. We will identify the points Paul made as we read Romans the 6th chapter starting at the first verse:

Romans 6:1-2

1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

Did you catch it? Paul begins making his points early in this chapter. Point number one is even though we are given grace God still forbids sin. Paul spends this whole chapter explaining this one point. Let's read more of the chapter to really discern Paul's point-based teaching -

Romans 6:3-4

3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Paul supports point number one by explaining what took place at the moment of salvation. At salvation, we were baptized into Christ’s death - meaning the sinner we once were died with Christ. Paul goes on to say Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. A life of sin is the old life of the old person you once were. But if that person has been crucified with Christ then that person is dead and a new you now lives and you are no longer condemned to the old life of sin. Wow, can you believe Paul communicated all of that in only four verses?

Romans 6:5-6

5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Paul reveals in the previous verses that salvation was designed to destroy the body of sin. We inherited this body of sin from Adam and Eve after their disobedience in the Garden of Eden and the effects of their disobedience made us servants of sin. This could only be removed by the blood Jesus Christ.

Romans 6:7

7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

I hope it's becoming clear to you that Paul dedicated this whole chapter to show that we are no longer who we once were. We are free from the bondage of sin.

Romans 6:8-10

8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:

9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

As once servants of sin we lived unto sin. But our atonement with the death caused us to die unto sin that we might now live unto God.

Romans 6:11-12

11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

Now according to verse twelve, we are instructed to not let sin reign in our mortal bodies. This implies that we can now cast down the temptation to sin. Neither do we have to obey it any longer.

Romans 6:13-14

13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

Now this passage of scripture explains a principal that is rarely seen by many people and that is the principal of grace. Most people know or define grace as unmerited favor, and thisis true. Where the misunderstanding comes in is how we define favor. Some people define unmerited favor as a blanket for sin which simply suggests no matter what we do wrong or how we sin grace makes it alright because we are Forgiven. But I submit to you this scripture says the exact opposite. Let me give you an analogy. Imagine a prisoner in prison. He is forced to wear a prison uniform, abide by the rules of the prison, eat the prison food, wake up and go to bed on the prison schedule. He is then freed and released back into society but even in society there are rules and laws that govern the society. Now let me explain the analogy. The prisoner, of course, is us and the prison represents sin. Grace is the freedom from the prison of sin and on the day of our release we entered society which represents the Body of Christ. The Body of Christ lives unto God which is made possible by grace. Therefore, the passage says sin will not have dominion over us. I do hope you understood my parable, now let's let the Bible teach the rest.

Romans 6:15-23

15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. 18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.

21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
