Lesson 10 - The New Creature: A Quickening Spirit

It is true for one to say, the sons of God were made new creatures at salvation. The word “new” allows us to understand that we are a creation that has never existed on the earth prior to now. The sons of God are the only beings on the earth who have had a born-again experience. This caused us to be changed from human beings into spiritual beings and children of the Most High God.

1 Corinthians 15:45

And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

The body of the first man, Adam, was made from the dust. All the organs of the body are simply a product of clay that has been sculpted by the Father. They are built with numerous nerves and systems which allow the body self-repair and maintenance.

When God was making the body, He was very mindful that the soul was going to express itself through it; therefore, there are certain organs designed specifically to allow expression. These organs are tied to the five senses.

For example, the skin is the largest organ of the body. It was designed with numerous neurons and nerves that would allow touch and the soul to feel. Also, the average person has about 10,000 taste buds on their tongue. These allow the tongue to taste and to differentiate tastes. Likewise, the eyes are built to see, the ears to hear and the nose to smell.

These organs of the body allow it to be a tool through which the soul can express itself. Through the five senses, the body allows the soul to interpret its environment to appearances, smells, feelings, tastes and sounds. The soul, too, was the result of the creative power of God. He took air and changed it from a lifeless being into a being with emotion, thought, feelings and desires. He placed that soul into the body and allowed it expression via the five senses. When He did this it became a living soul. A living soul is another phrase for a human being. It refers to a soul that is living (allowed to express itself) via a human body. It also means that the body is alive by the direct contact of a soul in it. All the emotions and desires can now be expressed, or experienced because it is within a body and has access to the organs of the senses.

However, with the soul, comes the spirit of the mind. The spirit of the mind allows the soul to generate feelings, emotions, or even experiences which may or may not have anything to do with its immediate surroundings.

For example, when we go to sleep, our senses are in ‘off’ mode, however, though my five senses are less sensitive, my soul can dream.

Here is another example. I can be out with several friends who are having a great time, I can use my body to smile and laugh, but simultaneously I may be very depressed and hurting inside.

These feelings are not a result of the interpretation of stimuli by the natural senses, but rather they are experienced in the imagination and the heart. The imagination allows an alternate reality, that the soul can go to and create its own experiences. For example, someone may have done something to offend me ten years ago, however, though that offense may never be repeated I can relive it daily by way of the imagination. This will allow the offense to stay fresh in the mind, and its sting (hurt), though ten years later, can be even greater than the time the offense was committed.

Acts 17:28

For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

The being refers to the soul, or the inner-man. Therefore, a human being is one whose being is in a human body. However, in Christ the being has been concealed inside of the Holy Spirit, thus changing it from soul to Spirit. This operation is the creation of a quickening spirit or the new creature. Seeing that the soul is concealed in the Holy Spirit it would then mean that the Holy Spirit is in direct contact with the flesh. This allows the Holy Ghost access to all the benefits of the flesh – the senses. He can use His eyes to look upon those He loves. He may use His ears to listen to them speak. He may use His arms to embrace them. Jesus is now tangible via the body.

As it relates to the soul however, it is in the Holy Spirit. The Spirit provides an environment for the soul of the believer. Unlike living souls, quickening spirits have the emotions of the Holy Spirit. The thoughts, emotions, and imaginations generated by the soul can now be according to the Spirit that it is housed in. When the new creature produces righteous thoughts which in turn produces righteous emotions, this is the manifestation of the mind of Christ.

Prior to salvation, our experiences in circumstances, situations and relationships shaped our belief systems. These CSRs were not alone in this shaping; they were accompanied by the spirit of iniquity within us that led us to diverse sins and carnal perspectives. It counseled us in evil, hate and uncleanness. This caused our belief system and spiritual disposition to be based on self-preservation rather than self-denial. In addition, we were convinced that we were doing the right thing. However, in Christ the soul experiences righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost. At salvation, the Holy Ghost destroyed all our previous belief systems that convinced us of self-preservation. The Holy Ghost, is the Spirit of Truth, and He not only teaches the soul righteousness, but makes it righteous. The mind of Christ allows us to generate the emotions of the Spirit. To think as Christ thinks, to feel as He feels. It is truly Jesus who is living in our bodies, and He will use its senses for His ministry.

It is imperative, therefore, when teaching/preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to preach according to the Spirit. This simply means we must not leave any question in the minds of the listeners. Our preaching to the Church must be to the new creature within them, rather to their disbeliefs and perceived limitations. Our preaching to the lost must be a gospel which seeks to rescue them from the control of the enemy and to preserve their souls from hell. You will find that when you do not minister from the position of the Spirit, you will make provisions for the flesh. Preaching from the position of the flesh is incapable of producing manifested Sons of God.
