The Anointing

The very first time we see the word anoint used in scripture is in Gen. 31:13; ‘I am the God of Bethel, where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst a vow unto me.’... This was a place where Jacob saw the ladder coming down from heaven with the Lord standing at the top of it. The angels of the Lord were ascending and descending from heaven to earth. He called the place Bethel, the house of God.

Remember the Old Testament is always the schoolmaster. Jacob poured the oil on the stones he had used for pillows the night before. He also made vows unto the Lord. It was there they entered into a covenant relationship; basically, “If you keep me, I will serve you.” Gen.28:11-15. More than fourteen years later, God spoke to Jacob, introducing himself as the God of Abraham, and Isaac. “I am the God of Bethel, where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst a vow unto me.”... This Bethel was a place set aside as the house of God. It was a place of covenant relationship. It was also a place where God revealed himself. These are all characteristics of the anointing of the Holy Ghost.

The anointing speaks to the fact, whatever is anointed is set aside for God.

But let us continue with the schoolmaster that we might also see the mind and heart of the Father regarding the church.

Exodus 30:22-25

22 Moreover the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

23 Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, (12.6 lbs.) and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels,(6.3 lbs.), and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels, (6.3 lbs.)

24 And of cassia five hundred shekels, (12.6 lbs), after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin: (1.5 gal)

25 And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.

Spices for the Holy Anointing Oil

These are the spices that were mixed with the olive oil. Before we speak specifically of the oil, let us examine each of the spices Moses was instructed to blend in with the oil. Pastor Bill Kirk did a study on the spices used in the Holy Anointing Oil that I think is very comprehensive and can be used here.

PURE MYRRH (12.6 lbs.): The Patience of the Saints

The Myrrh Tree • The myrrh tree grew to be about eight to nine feet high. The trunk was thorny and its wood was very hard. • Myrrh itself is a thick gummy sap extracted from the stem of the myrrh tree.

• It was used for perfume, and in embalming the dead.

• In Biblical times, the thick gummy sap came out so slow that it took years to draw out just one bucket. Pastor Bill Kirk This is one of the ingredients God chose to make his Holy Anointing Oil. Why of all the herbs in the field, did he choose this one? What is he trying to say to the church as we study the anointing? No doubt, the myrrh and other ingredients used in making the anointing oil, is a type of the attributes of the Holy Ghost. But the fact that it was used as a perfume as well as an embalming agent, points to the fact that our life must be as a pleasant fragrance before the Lord.

However, that can only happen if the flesh is crucified and its deeds mortified.

Time is used by God to reveal the true spiritual disposition of his creation. The time involved in retrieving the sap points to the patience every son of God must exemplify.

Romans 8:20

20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,

Every one of us who received the Holy Ghost, was subjected to hope. Hope is a great expectation of receiving all that God has promised. We live our lives in this world with the hope of entering into the next. But this is a hostile and violent world where we are hated and abused. But the Holy Ghost has given us the power to wait patiently on the coming of the Lord. Though there are many trials to be encountered, we are comforted, Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. James 1:3-4. This patience is an attribute of the Holy Ghost. We have no choice but to wait for the return of the Master. But in what state are you waiting for him? Are you murmuring or complaining, or do you walk in the spirit of contentment?

The ability to wait patiently on the Lord is in our nature. To be anxious and discontent is to work against your own nature. Judge yourself in this matter. To be patient in the midst of adversity, suffering and need, is to walk in the Holy Spirit. You will never walk in the anointing of the Holy Ghost, until you give completely over to the leading of the Spirit. Sensitivity to the Holy Ghost is not making yourself constantly aware of his presence. This concept suggests that he is separate and apart from you. But rather, it is to walk in the senses of the Spirit.

Hebrews 5:14

But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

We must grow-up into using our spiritual senses. This growth takes time and patience; because It is developed through life with its trials and much tribulation.

James 1:4 – “Let patience have her perfect work.”

Patience can only have its perfect work if the son is truly led by the Holy Ghost. Just as the Holy Ghost led Jesus into the wilderness to be tested, he will lead us into trials and situations that will require the patience of the Lord Jesus Christ to be exercised in order to please God. If we seek to circumvent these trials, sufferings, or inconveniences, we will never walk in the fullness of the statue of Jesus Christ. We will cheat ourselves out of true spiritual development, which also develops confidence in God. You might not think that patience is a ‘must have’ virtue if we are to see the face of the Lord in peace. But I submit to you, this is a virtue that will be tried all the way to the end of the church age.

Revelation 14:9-12

9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,

10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:

11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

The apostles were the first partakers of the Holy Ghost. Take note of the testimony of John, ‘I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.’ Revelation 1:9. To receive the Holy Ghost is to receive the life, testimony and patience of the Lord Jesus Christ. If you have not patience, it is because you have rejected the life of Christ given to you. God subjected us to hope, and hope requires patience.

1 John 2:27

27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

• There was also myrrh that was inferior in quality. It was extracted by cutting down the tree and splitting it open to “get it quick”. This myrrh was impure and not of a good quality. (Offered by Pastor Bill Kirk)

The anointing is the manifestation of the Father's presence in you. Out of our bellies are to flow rivers of living waters. The anointing is already as strong as it needs to be. But if we are weak in character, contentment and overall patience, the anointing will not flow from us into the situations we need it to.

Consider the words of the apostle...But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. Galatians 2:17. It is not the anointing that grows over a long period of time, it is the sons of God who have not fully embraced the truth that must simply stop resisting the Holy Ghost, by being anxious and impatient. There is no “get it quick class” or “crash course" in spiritual things, that will get you the anointing of God. The anointing is the working of the Holy Ghost in and through you. Again I say, “You have the patience of Jesus Christ, embrace it and live.”
