Chapter 8: What is the Day of the Lord for You?

THE WEAPONS OF GOD’S WARFARE

Finally my brothers and sisters, let us revisit a word from the prophet Amos.

Amos 5:18

Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light.

This is the question each of us must, or should answer from the depths of our spirit; for it is the spirit that knows us. It knows the darkness that seeks to hide in the corners of our mind or heart. It knows our slackness, apathy, and mental rebellion. Therefore, it is urgent that we be thankful for this moment in time, in which the Father has granted us a space to repent before that great and terrible day is upon us.

Peter says it better than I ever could.

2 Peter 3:10-18

10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Peter asks the same question as Amos; “What manner of persons ought ye to be?” But Peter goes on to answer this question. In light of the fact that the Day of the Lord is surely coming, we ought to have a holy conversation or life. We ought to walk in all the things that have been freely given to us that pertain to godliness.

12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? I love the way the apostle and the prophet bring these truths home to us. Though on that day, the heavens will be on fire and the stars will melt with fervent heat, we should desire that day to hasten in coming. Why? Well, he tells us why in the next verse.

13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

We know that the closer we get to the Wrath of God being poured out in the earth, the closer we are to our redemption from the earth. We know that we, the saints of God, are not appointed to His wrath. We have the promise from God that we will be caught up into Heaven before the vial judgments, the outpouring of God’s wrath, begins. But we are told to watch for the signs of His coming; for they will forecast the time of the closeness of His return.

14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

We are right back here again. No sin will enter Heaven. The dead who die while walking outside of the boundaries of the faith, will not rise in the first resurrection; nor will those who are alive and remain, who forsake the truth and walk in error, be caught up in the rapture. So let us not be in despair, for the Lord has already spoken to us saying, “You can trust holiness; you can trust the holiness you walk in.” That is our salvation. Our walk in the Spirit will allow us to be found in peace, without spot, and blameless.

Therefore, I want to encourage you to make all your wrongs right. Examine yourself thoroughly, making sure that you are not offending the Holy Ghost in anything. Let us not be found lacking in that day. Forgive and forget the offenses of your life. Bury them in the sea of forgetfulness. Want nothing from this world. Work the ministry of reconciliation that you might have fruit when He returns.

15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

For the unlearned and the unstable, their disposition makes these things hard to be understood. So they will wrestle with these teachings and other scriptures as well. The word of God must be spiritually discerned. Their lack of steadfastness will not allow them to truly learn or comprehend the word of God. Thus, their instability will lead to their own destruction.

17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

Take heed to Peter’s final warning here. Don’t be found hopeless in the Day of the Lord.

18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

Allow the knowledge of God to mature you; that you might be able to glorify God in these last of the last days.
