WHAT IS THE NEW MAN?

So far in this course, we have covered the first two steps of salvation:

1. The Putting Off of the Old Man – The soul is removed from the flesh, causing both body and soul to die. The sins of the flesh and soul are then circumcised away, making them clean.
2. The Creation of the New Creature – The soul is placed in the Holy Spirit, receiving life and expression through the Spirit. It takes on an eternal and righteous nature and is preserved from death. Although the new creature is alive, the body remains dead.

The final step in the operation of salvation is the putting on of the new man.

Ephesians 4:24

And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Lesson 1 in this course taught us that the old man refers to the body of sin we were born with; similarly, the new man is also a body. The new man is the body that has been joined to the Spirit of God. Let us consider their distinctions:

Old Man: The body of sin and death. (Romans 6:6, Romans 7:24)

New Creature: The soul in Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

New Man: The body with Christ in it.

Let us take a moment to examine Colossians 2, as it provides great detail on the operation of salvation. The table below should be used as a guide.

Note, Romans 8 also speaks about the quickening of the body to life at salvation.

Romans 8:10

And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

Consider the diagram below that illustrates the stages.

COLOSSIANS 2:11-13 INTERPRETATION

11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

At salvation, the body of sin was separated from the soul, and both were sanctified.

12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

The soul was then baptized into the Holy Spirit, allowing it to partake in Christ’s death and resurrection through divine atonement.

13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

Finally, the body, which died to be freed from sin, was quickened, or raised to life, by the Spirit of Christ, along with our soul in Him.

If Christ is in you…

• The body is dead because of sin: The body of sin died so that the soul might be freed from sin.
• But the Spirit is life because of righteousness: The soul, which once had life through the flesh, is now brought to life by the Holy Spirit. The soul in the Spirit creates a new creature that is born in righteousness.28

Romans 8:11

But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Notice how verse 11 expands on verse 10. In verse 10, it is explained that the body died in order to be freed from sin, and that the soul was brought to life by the Holy Spirit. However, verse 11 explains the next step: “he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies.” The Holy Spirit raises the mortal, or natural, body to life by entering it. This is known as the putting on of the new man.

The result of putting on the new man is a son of God. The body contains the Holy Ghost, and the Holy Ghost houses the soul and spirit. Thus, just as Jesus was in the Father and the Father was in Him, we have been made as He is. We are in God, and God is in us. We are one.

28 Paul states that if Christ is in you, the body is dead—indicating he is speaking to the soul. When the soul was removed from the flesh, it lost its life, causing the body to die. So, to the soul, the body is dead, and now life is found in the Spirit rather than in the flesh.

THE MYSTERY OF THE NEW MAN

There is a mystery concerning the new man that, if discerned, reveals the Mystery of Christ.

We have established that the new man is Christ in the body. In Course 1, we learned that the purpose of the body is to house, identify, express, and give access to the earth for the spiritual entity within it. As a result, through the bodies of believers, Christ once again has access to the earth.

The bodies of believers are the temples of the Holy Ghost.

In fact, they no longer belong to the soul, as they were purchased with the blood of Christ.

Find three Scriptures that indicate that Christ is in the born-again believer, signifying His presence in their bodies. 29 Use the table below to document what each Scripture conveys.

3.3 Impact of the Christ’s Presence in the Flesh

19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

After salvation, the body no longer belongs to the soul; it belongs to God and is for His use. Just as the soul and Satan once expressed themselves through the flesh, now Christ will. Through salvation, the Word has once again been made flesh.

Adam became an individual when his soul was placed in his body. Similarly, at salvation, Jesus’ Spirit is placed within our bodies. Thus, the new man is an individual— it is Christ in the flesh. The new man is Christ.

Jana was a new Christian and a dedicated teacher—always attentive to her students’ struggles and willing to go the extra mile to help them succeed. It seemed as though she was consumed with their academic progress, yet she never missed an opportunity to point them toward spiritual truth. Her heart was not only for their grades but for their growth in God.

One day, while leading her class through a deep reflective activity, something unexpected happened. In the stillness of the room, Jana suddenly heard a quiet voice say, “This is an undercover operation.” She was stunned. Looking behind her, she saw no one. She glanced to her right, toward the doorway, just in time to see a Christian teacher walking past.

She rushed out, heart racing with excitement.

“Mr. Ricks! Mr. Ricks!” she called out.

He turned as she beamed, “Our job is an undercover operation for God!” He laughed in agreement, sensing the truth in her words.

Jana ran back to her classroom, filled with joy—more aware than ever that her calling wasn’t just to teach as she was doing, but to help uncover what God desired to do in the hearts of her students.

How does the scenario illustrate Jesus as an undercover agent?

As we continue to prove that the new man is Christ in the flesh, consider how the two Scriptures below align.

Notice that what is called the new man in Colossians is simply called Christ in Galatians. This is because when Christ enters our flesh, it is a manifestation of Christ in bodily form. Thus, Jesus has returned to earth, living through the bodies of believers. However, the mystery is that, although we have put on Christ, He is in disguise, appearing as us.

It is important to clarify that I am not saying we are the man who died on the cross or the one who will return on a white horse. Rather, I am emphasizing that we are the Body of Christ on earth because His Spirit dwells in our flesh. Jesus warned that in the last days, some would falsely claim, “I am Christ.” We are not the Christ—we are members of His Body.

Consider Colossians below.

Colossians 2:8-10

8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

COLOSSIANS 3:9-11 GALATIANS 3:27-28

9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

In Christ, the fullness of the Godhead dwells in bodily form. As He abides in the flesh, we are within Him and made complete through Him.

The fact that the body has become a new man, carries great significance. Use the points below to find and add supporting Scriptures.

1. The New Man is the Image of God: Now that our bodies are temples of the

Holy Spirit—just as Jesus’ body was—they allow the invisible God to be seen, touched, and heard through us.

2. The Body is Now a Body of Righteousness and Cannot Sin: 1 John 3:9 teaches that the new man cannot sin. Before salvation, the body was influenced by the spirit of iniquity, leading the soul to sin. However, now that Christ lives in the body, He ensures that the body will produce righteousness rather than sin.
3. We Are Members of the Body of Christ: Since the new man is the literal body of Christ and our souls are placed within Him, the bodies we call our own actually belong to Jesus. They are bone of His bone and flesh of His flesh. In fact, if a son of God commits fornication, they are joining the members of Christ to a harlot.
4. We Are All One in Christ: All born-again believers have put on the new man, making up the body of Christ. Thus, each of us is a member or body part of

Christ, with Christ as the head of His body, the Church.

5. We Are Stewards of the Body of Christ: Though our bodies belong to God,

He allows us to be stewards of His flesh. In other words, He submits to the soul within, allowing it to control His flesh. In response, the soul should consider itself dead to the flesh and allow Christ to fully use His body, using it only for righteousness and actions that please God.

6. Christ Remains in the Flesh as a High Priest: Jesus now remains in our flesh, ensuring that Satan can never re enter it. From within, Jesus keeps our souls, offering strength, intercession, and conviction when necessary.
7. The Body Will One Day Be Refashioned into Spirit by the Spirit Within: At salvation, though the soul becomes heavenly, the body, though sanctified, remains natural. However, on the day of the rapture, the natural body will be transformed into a spiritual body to match the spiritual nature of the new creature. Until then, the sons of God remain in natural bodies to stay connected to humanity and to demonstrate to principalities and powers that righteousness is possible in the flesh.

CONCLUSION

of the new man. The sanctified body, once dead due to sin, is quickened by the Holy Ghost and rejoined with the soul, becoming the literal temple of Christ. This is no longer our body—it is His. It is Christ’s return to the earth in disguise, housed within our humanity.

This is the mystery of the Gospel made manifest: the Word has become flesh once again, not just in one man, but in many sons. We are not ordinary people trying to live righteous lives—we are the righteousness of God in Christ, living out His divine purpose on the earth. As stewards of His body, we are called to surrender fully, so that every movement, word, and thought glorifies the Christ who now dwells in us.

OVERVIEW OBJECTIVES

Interpret Isaiah 53:10 and John 17 to explain the concept of Christ’s days being prolonged through believers.
