Chapter 3: Understanding the Dierent Manifestations

The “Unknown Tongue” for Divine Communication Now, whether you concede to this truth or not, there is an operation of speaking in tongues called an “ unknown tongue.”

If this were not the case, Paul would not have to explain it in the book of 1 Corinthians, the 14th chapter. “Follow aer charity, and desire spiritual gis, but rather that ye may prophesy. For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” 1 Corinthians 14:1-2 KJV

We know the dierence in this version of speaking in tongues because it indicates that no man understands him who is speaking. So there is no interpreter of this language, because this language is purposed for prayer unto God.

“He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.” 1 Corinthians 14:4 KJV

This version of speaking in tongues is widely known as praying in the spirit, and as the scripture says, it edies the one that is speaking to the Father in this manner.

A Call for Order

But like all good things, a lack of discipline and temperance can lessen the integrity of a thing. You see, many people have used this operation to appear more spiritual than others. I would even argue that because the heart is not pure, neither is the tongue that they are speaking in, and actually, the Holy Spirit is not involved. With that being said, Paul never forbid speaking in tongues or praying in the spirit; he simply says:

“Let all things be done decently and in order.” 1 Corinthians 14:40 KJV
