📖 James 1:12 – “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.”
The Bible, especially the KJV, mentions temptation in different ways:
So when the Bible uses the word “tempt”, or “temptation” it is not always referring to sin; it could be referencing a trial or test. Regardless of what form temptation takes, its purpose remains: it will always reveal a person’s heart - whether righteous or impure. If your temptation comes to entice you into sin, and you yield your members to it, the rebellion of your heart is exposed. Likewise, if it comes as a trial of your faith and you endure, you prove your faith in God and receive an eternal reward. An enticement to sin – The devil appeals to our desires to pull us away from God (James 1:14).
A snare – Something subtle that traps us when we aren’t vigilant (1 Corinthians 10:12-13).
Those are probably the most common understandings of temptation. But consider these not-so-common ones that are referenced in the Bible:
A test of faith – God tested Abraham’s love for Him when He asked him to sacrifice Isaac (Genesis 22:1).
A trial – Jesus was led into the wilderness to be tried (proven to be the son of God) by the devil (Matthew 4:1-3). To provoke – Israel provoked or “tempted’ God with their unbelief and idolatry (Exodus 17:2-7).
